Hardwood Auction Becomes Tender

The annual hardwood auction held by DJP Newland Rennie was effected by late Covid regulation changes resulting in the sale change to bids by tender opened at the Great Oak House Westonbirt on the 8th December. There were 36 lots on offer which attracted a total of 121 bids. All but 2 lots were sold achieving prices of reasonable levels. The top prices for oak was £442 pcm a record for oak logs from the New Forest.

Other prices and trends were as follows:-

Volumes on offer were below last year’s levels also indirectly due to the pandemic. There were 4 Lots of Standing parcels, 32 Lots of Logs and 1 Lot of Douglaus.

Logs comprised nearly all Oak except one lot of Sweet Chestnut, one of Ash and one of Yew.

Lot sizes were comparatively small as against previous sales and ranged from 23 cu.m to 191 cu.m (15 lots below 50 cu.m). Top price was £442 p.c.m, a sale record for New Forest for 11 lengths at 2.25 mᶾ average at Ferny Knapp. Others from the New Forest to £150

The second best price was £319 for one of the nine Southwick, Northants lots which comprised 29 logs to average 1.4 cu.m. Other Southwick lots were in the bracket of £210 to £278 p.c.m.

A similar run of 8 lots from Hazelborough, Northants made to £236 (average 1.23mᶾ) and others ranged from £144 to £220

A parcel of Oak from Sammies Wood in the Dean made £222 p.c.m. (averge 0.5 cu.m.). Of the two larger volume parcels from Micheldever, Hants. The top was £245 p.c.m. for 191 cu.m (logs average 1.1 cu.m.)

Other species a parcel of good Ash from Southwick achieved £97 p.c.m. (average log volume 1.53 cu.m). Sweet Chestnut from the Dean £70 p.c.m. (average 1.3 cu.m) and Yew from Old Fonthill Abbey, Wilts £2,000 for 5 cu.m.

Standing Sales

Achieved a top of £37 p.t. for a Beech and Oak mix in New Park, Wyre including sizes to 42 to 47 cm dbh. Also a large parcel of mostly Beech in Thetford made £28 pcm with sizes mostly between 28 and 54cm dbh.

There was one lot of short logs from Micheldever that achieved £41 per tonne and a parcel of mature Douglas Fir roadside made £84 per cu.m.

The next sale which will be held on the traditional last Thursday of November 2021 being the 25th.
